On Saturday september 3rd our daughter C�line married Samuel in the village of Epargnes. It all started last year. Samuel probably popped the question last summer and they decided to get married the following year. Samuel bought an engagement ring and the next step was the marriage. C�line and Samuel organized 90% of the wedding day . We suggested a local caterer who was recommended by our friends and helped to decorate the tables. The couple chose a church service which was held after the civil ceremony. Flowers were arranged in the church the day before the wedding. On Saturday morning , the young couple were driven to the townhall in a vintage car (a 1953 Citroen traction) and our mayor was inside the townhall waiting for the bride and bridegroom. The room wasn't big enough to welcome all the guests. In a traditional French wedding there aren't any bridemaids . There's one or two witnesses who sign the Registry. After the civil ceremony which was held in a friendly atmosphere. G�rard ( the mayor of Epargnes) kissed the bride and wished the best to the newly-weds. He handed C�line the family record book and said" here's the livret de famille for the head of the family", handing it to C�line then still smiling he handed it to Samuel . The atmosphere was not formal at all and most guests were smiling during the civil ceremony. Then it was time to reach the church for the religious service. The guests arrived first and then on the song of " only time" by Enya the bridegroom and his mother walked towards the altar followed by the bride's mother and bridegroom's father , witnesses and grandmother, then last to arrive the bride's father and the bride. The bride's father walked C�line down the aisle until they reached the priest near the altar. C�line was wearing a white wedding dress with a train and a veil but her face was not covered in a veil. She was carrying a bouquet of flowers. The guests watched the procession and the service lasted about an hour and contained readings from the Gospel Bible. In France the priest doesn't ask if there are any objections to the marriage and at the end of the service the couple were proclaimed man and wife and they signed the marriage register At that point the priest and the guests applaused to express joy and happiness. Then on the music of Billy Preston " my sweet Lord" two teenagers walked through the aisle to collect money for the church. Next the priest and the guests recited our father prayer and the priest blessed C�line and Samuel. The couple eventually came out on the song " we have all the time" by Louis Amstrong and the guests threw rose petals while they were coming out. After the religious ceremony , we all walked to the "salle des f�tes" to have " le vin d'honneur" and some nibbles. It was also the time to take photos with the family and friends. My husband sang " She " a song by Charles Aznavour ( the only song he wrote in English and he never sang it in French) Then a part of the guests left for lunch and the family drove to the place where lunch was served. It was about 3 pm and the meal lasted until 8 pm. A DJ was hired to entertain the guests games were performed during the meal and the guests had to do a quizz about the young couple. The bridegroom's friends sang a song about C�line and Samuel. Then around 8pm guests who were at " le vin d'honneur" came to an evening cocktail and for a local drink made of cognac / apple or pineau/ cherry. While the guest were enjoying the warm evening outside, our caterer and his employees moved the tables to make room for dancing. C�line and Samuel opened the bal dancing on a Mickael Jackson's song and they were joined by a part of the guests to dance with them. Then a group of English friends sang the famous French song " la vie en rose" in French and in English ,May ( 83 years old) performed the French version! The disco lasted until 5 am and Samuel's father tended the bar. The next day after a short night's sleep, guests were expected to come again for a brunch. There were about 90 people and the day went smoothly . In late afternoon , most guests had to leave to go back to the places where they live and we brought th rest of the food back to the "salle des f�tes" to have dinner and ended the evening talking and relaxing with family and friends who live nearby or with the ones who decided to spend a couple of days in the area. That Saturday was the most unforgettable day of our life.

Un mariage en Charente Maritime

Samedi 3 septembre notre fille C�line s'est mari�e avec Samuel dans le village d'Epargnes. Tout a commen�� l'ann�e derni�re. Samuel a probablement demand� C�line en mariage l'�t� dernier et ils ont d�cid� de se marier l'ann�e suivante. Samuel a achet� une bague de fian�ailles et l'�tape suivante a �t� le mariage.
C�line et Samuel ont organis� 90% du mariage. Nous avons sugg�r� un traiteur local qui nous avait �t� recommand� par nos amis et nous avons aid� � d�corer les tables.
Le couple avait choisit un mariage religieux qui s'est d�roul� apr�s le mariage civil � la mairie. Des fleurs ont �t� plac�es dans l'�glise la veille du mariage .
Samedi matin le jeune couple a �t� conduit � la mairie dans une voiture ancienne ( une traction de 1953) et notre Maire �tait � l'int�rieur de la mairie attendant les futurs mari�s. La salle n'�tait pas assez grande pour accueillir tous les invit�s.
Dans un mariage fran�ais traditionnel il n'y a pas de demoiselles d'honneur. Il y a un ou deux t�moins qui signent le registre. Apr�s le mariage civil qui s'est d�roul� dans une ambiance amicale. G�rard ( le Maire d' Epargnes) a embrass� la mari�e et a souhait� tous ses voeux de bonheur aux jeunes mari�s. Il a remis � C�line le livret de famille tout en disant " voici le livret de famille pour le chef de famille!" Ensuite toujours avec le sourire il l'a remis � Samuel.
L'ambiance n'�tait pas du tout formelle et la plupart des invit�s souriaient pendant la c�r�monie civile. Ensuite, il �tait l'heure d'aller � l'�glise pour la c�r�monie religieuse. Les invit�s sont arriv�s les premiers et ensuite sur la chanson "only time" d'Enya le futur mari� et sa m�re se sont dirig�s vers l'autel suivi de la m�re de la future mari�e accompagn�e par le p�re du futur mari�, les t�moins et la grand-m�re, ensuite le dernier , le p�re de la mari�e avec la future mari�e.
Le p�re de la mari�e a conduit C�line dans l'all�e centrale jusqu'au pr�tre � c�t� de l'autel. C�line portait une robe de mari�e blanche avec une tra�ne et un voile mais le voile ne lui recouvrait pas le visage. Elle avait un bouquet. Le invit�s ont regard� la procession et la c�r�monie religieuse a dur� environ une heure et contenait des lectures de l' Evangile. En France le pr�tre ne demande pas s'il y a des objections au mariage et � la fin de la c�r�monie le couple est d�clar� mari et femme et ils signent le registre de mariage. A ce moment l� le pr�tre et les invit�s ont applaudi pour exprimer leur joie et leur bonheur Ensuite, sur la musique de Billy Preston " My sweet Lord" deux adolescentes se sont d�plac�es pour faire la qu�te pour l'�glise Par la suite, le pr�tre et les invit�s ont r�cit� "Notre P�re" et le pr�tre a b�ni C�line et Samuel
A la fin le couple est sorti sur la chanson "we have all the time" de Louis Amstrong et les invit�s ont lanc� des p�tales de roses pendant qu'ils sortaient
Apr�s la c�r�monie religieuse, nous sommes tous all�s � pied � la salle des f�tes pour prendre le vin d'honneur et quelques amuse-bouches C'�tait aussi l'heure de prendre des photos avec la famille et les amis Mon mari a chant� "She" une chanson de Charles Aznavour ( la seule chanson qu'il ait �crit en anglais et qu'il n'a jamais chant� en fran�ais) Ensuite une partie des invit�s est partie d�jeuner et la famille a repris la voiture pour aller � l'endroit o� le d�jeuner �tait servi. Il �tait 15 heure et le repas a dur� jusqu'� 20 heure. A DJ a �t� engag� pour divertir les invit�s , des jeux ont �t� faits pendant le repas et les invit�s ont d� faire un quizz sur le jeune couple. Les amis du mari� ont chant� une chanson � propos de C�line et Samuel. Ensuite vers 20 heure les invit�s qui �taient au vin d'honneur sont revenus pour un cocktail du soir et pour prendre une boisson locale faite de cognac /pomme ou bien de pineau/ cerise.
Pendant que les invit�s appr�ciaient la soir�e chaude � l'ext�rieure, notre traiteur et ses employ�s d�pla�aient les tables pour faire de la place pour danser. C�line et Samuel ont ouvert le bal en dansant sur une chanson de Michael Jackson et ils ont �t� rejoints par une partie des invit�s pour danser avec eux.
Ensuite un groupe d'amis anglais a chant� la c�l�bre chanson fran�aise " la vie en rose" en fran�ais et en anglais, May ( 83 ans ) a chant� aussi la version fran�aise!
La soir�e disco a dur� jusqu'� 5 heure du matin et le p�re de Samuel s'est occup� de tenir le bar.
Le lendemain apr�s une courte nuit de sommeil, les invit�s devaient revenir pour un brunch. Il y avait environ 90 personnes et la journ�e s'est d�roul�e tranquillement. En fin d'apr�s midi, la plupart des invit�s devait repartir chez eux et nous avons rapport� le reste du brunch � la salle des f�tes pour dinner et nous avons termin� la soir�e en discutant et en se relaxant avec la famille et les amis qui habitent dans les environs o� avec ceux qui avaient d�cid� de passer quelques jours dans la r�gion.
Ce samedi l� a �t� le jour le plus inoubliable de notre vie.
