Il y a quelques mois d�j�, nous avons d�cid� de prendre l'avion de Limoges � Liverpool (vol direct) pour le concert de " Brit Floyds" qui avait lieu dans le " liverpool Echo arena". Cela nous a donn� l'opportunit� aussi de rendre visite � nos amis Ann et Russ � Chester et de visiter les sites int�ressants de Liverpool et de la petite ville de Chester.

Liverpool est situ�e au nord ouest de l' Angleterre, sur la rive Est de l'estuaire de la Mersey.La population de Liverpool s'est d�velopp�e tr�s vite en particulier avec les migrants irlandais et la ville a �t� et est aussi le domicile d'une large population de Galois. Le nord du pays de Galles �tant seulement � quelques heures en voiture.
Liverpool est aussi c�l�bre en tant que port d'enregistrement du Titanic et si�ge social  de la compagnie maritime White Star Line propri�taires du navire.
Les changements �conomiques ont malheureusement contribu� au d�clin de la ville au d�but des ann�es 1930 ( La Grande D�pression) et � partir du milieu des ann�es70 les docks de Liverpool et les entreprises traditionnelles ont subi un grand d�clin. Depuis quelques ann�es, en fait depuis le milieu des ann�es 90, l'�conomie de Liverpool a repris et le taux de croissance est plus �lev� que la moyenne nationale dans le Royaume Uni.

Le tourisme est devenu un facteur significatif de l'�conomie de Liverpool, essentiellement bas� sur la popularit� des Beatles.

Les natifs de Liverpool sont appel�s les "Scousers" mot d�riv� de "Scouse "qui est un terme pour cet accent ou dialecte propre � Liverpool. Le mot "Scouse" est aussi d�riv� du mot " Lobscouse" un rago�t traditionnel de marins, en g�n�ral compos� d'agneau et de pain extr�mement rassis.
Les humoristes britanniques utilisent les st�r�otypes des scousers ce qui peut-�tre ne fait pas toujours plaisir aux natifs de Liverpool!!!!

Autrefois, Liverpool �tait sans aucun doute un site majeur pour la construction navale qui fournissait des vaisseaux pour les propri�taires locaux qui d�veloppaient leurs liaisons commerciales surtout trans-atlantiques.
La ville est toujours un port important (c'est le port principal pour le commerce avec l'Am�rique du nord). En 2008, Liverpool a �t� nomm�e Capitale europ�enne de la culture.
A partir des ann�es 80, elle a mis en avant le tourisme en utilisant son patrimoine comme une attraction.
Liverpool est aussi tr�s connue pour son club de football. Fond� en 1892 le club est class� premier league. Il a gagn� cinq coupes europ�ennes.

Une journ�e � Liverpool.

 Il y a tant de sites � visiter qu'il �tait difficile pour nos amis de s�lectionner les endroits les plus int�ressants � visiter dans une journ�e. Ils ont tr�s bien organis� et fait une bonne s�lection.
Nous sommes arriv�s le weekend du "Black Friday" et afin d'�viter d'�tre bloqu� sur l'autoroute le samedi matin, nous avons pris le train de Chester � Liverpool. Il faut environ 40 minutes jusqu'� la gare de Liverpool. Nous sommes arriv�s � environ 10.30 et sommes all�s tout de suite au mus�e . Le mus�e est gratuit ainsi que toutes les expositions et les �v�nements.

Le mus�e de Liverpool refl�te l'histoire de la ville, des habitants et de sa culture. Vous pouvez comprendre comment le port, les habitants, le sport ont model� la ville. Les affiches pr�sentent la vie, le travail et les activit�s de loisirs des habitants de Liverpool de toutes les couches sociales depuis les deux derni�res d�cennies. Certaines pr�sentations sont plus orient�es pour les enfants mais elles sont dignes d'int�r�t.
Nous sommes all�s voir l'exposition r�serv�e aux Beatles o� nous avons tous les quatre commenc� un karaok� sur la chanson "Yellow Submarine". nous avons �t� acclam�s de fa�on amicale par deux jeunes filles qui �coutaient notre interpr�tation.
Ensuite nous avons poursuivi notre visite de Liverpool et sommes all�s faire une visite guid�e de la ville en prenant un bus � imp�rial. La m�t�o �tait �pouvantable, il faisait froid, il pleuvait et il y avait beaucoup de vent. Certains touristes courageux , qui n'�taient pas frileux, se sont assis � l'�tage sans toit.
Liverpool poss�de de nombreux b�timents historiques. Le"Royal Liver Building, le Cunard building et le Port of Liverpool building.Ces trois b�tisses majestueuses ont �t� con�ues et construites pour �tre les symboles apparents du prestige international de Liverpool , des embl�mes imposants de ses prouesses commerciales.
Au sommet de chaque tour du Royal Liver Building se  trouvent les oiseaux mythiques appel�s "liver" birds
( mi cormoran, mi aigle) . La l�gende populaire dit que pendant qu'un oiseau g�ant regarde la ville avec attention pour prot�ger ses habitants, l'autre oiseau regarde la mer et les marins qui arrivent au port.
par contre,une autre l�gende locale raconte qu' un des oiseaux est un m�le, il regarde c�t� ville pour voir si les pubs sont ouverts, alors que l'autre est une femelle, elle regarde la mer pour voir s'il y a de beaux marins qui remontent la rivi�re.

Le Sailor's Home

Le sailor's home �tait le foyer des marins qui leur offrait  un logement bon march� quand ils restaient au port. il y avait m�me une caisse d'�pargnes et une poste.C'�tait financ� par les n�gociants et les propri�taires de navires. Le foyer a exist� de 1850 � 1969.
Quand le recensement a �t� fait en 1881 il y avait 118 marins qui y s�journaient.Ils venaient du monde entier, y compris la France, l'Am�rique du Nord, la Scandinavie, Malte et les Barbades.
Le liver bird en gr�s ( � droite) �tait � l'origine au centre de la sculpture au dessus de la porte du foyer des marins. Il a �t� d�couvert par des arch�ologues avant la construction du centre commercial "ONE".

Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral

Les �glises et les cath�drales sont aussi les caract�ristiques de Liverpool.
La cath�drale catholique ( ci-dessus et � droite) ) porte aussi le surnom de Paddy's wigwam ( le wigwam de l'Irlandais) � cause de son architecture moderne ressemblant effectivement � une tente indienne.

La cath�drale anglicane de Liverpool est d'une architecture plus massive et plus classique.( ci dessous et � droite)

The Beatles Story
Vous ne pouvez pas quitter Liverpool sans avoir visiter le mus�e des Beatles et le "Cavern club" Le mus�e a ouvert ses portes en 1990. Julia , la demi-soeur de John Lennon est la narratrice dans l'audio guide en fran�ais, mais son fran�ais est �l�mentaire et ennuyeux, � la longue vous devenez indiff�rent � la narration et vous vous concentrez sur les affiches et l'exposition. Je recommande donc la version anglaise pour les visiteurs qui ma�trisent la langue. La partie la plus int�ressante est sans aucun doute la r�plique du "Cavern Club", l'endroit o� les Beatles se produisaient.Mais il y a une large collection de documents originaux, manuscripts, interviews, souvenirs, 'instruments de musique, v�tements, le piano blanc, les lunettes de John Lennon.
Le mus�e des Beatles vous retrace la mani�re dont le groupe s'est form�, comment ils ont chang� et finalement se sont s�par�s.
Lorsque nous sommes all�s dans la partie Strawberry fields et Penny Lane, nous nous sommes retrouv�s � chanter envahis par l'ambiance des ann�es 60. Bien que le prix de la visite soit un petit peu �lev�, cette visite nous fait remonter dans l'histoire des Beatles d'une mani�re vivante et nostalgique � la fois, et pour ceux qui sont int�ress�s par la culture pop et l'histoire populaire britannique, c'est une visite � ne pas manquer.

                                                        La fin d'une �poque.
Le 27 mai 1973, apr�s de nombreux probl�mes, la "Cavern" � ferm� ses portes d�finitivement malgr� des manifestations virulentes de la part des fans.Quelques ann�es plus tard, l'entrepot situ� au dessus f�t d�truit pour faire place � la ligne de chemin de fer. Cependant cela ne s'est jamais fait et en 1984 un complex commercial ( Cavern Walks) � �t� construit sur le site dont une partie comprend le" Cavern Club" et un pub du nom de Abbey road. Le groupe Queen a fait son tout premier concert � la Cavern le jour de Halloween en 1970. Freddie Mercury habitait dans Penny Lane � cette �poque l�.
la Caverne est un lieu embl�matique et la destination par excellence quand vous �tes � Liverpool. Cela vous fait revenir aux ann�es 60. Quand nous y �tions, le deuxi�me groupe de musiciens �tait tr�s bon. Le groupe a chant� les succ�s pr�f�r�s et bien qu'il faisit tr�s chaud et que l'on transpirait beaucoup et que c'�tait noir de monde on ne pouvait s'emp�cher de chanter et danser avec les autres. L'ambiance est g�niale. Sans h�sitation, je recommande d'aller � la Caverne lorsque vous visiter Liverpool.

A couple of months ago, we decided to fly from Limoges to Liverpool ( direct flight) for the Brit Floyds concert that took place in Liverpool Echo Arena. This gave us a chance to visit our friends Ann and Russ in Chester and go sightseeing around the city of Liverpool and the town of Chester.

Liverpool is in North West England, on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. The population of Liverpool grew rapidly especially with the Irish migrants and the city is also the home to a large Welsh population.
Liverpool is also known as the Titanic port of registration and home of the owners White Star Line.
Economic changes contributed to a decline in the city in the early 1930s ( the Great Depression) and from the mid-1970 onwards Liverpool docks and traditional manufacturing industries went into sharp decline too. In recent years, Liverpool's economy has recovered and has experienced growth rates higher than the national average in UK since the mid-nineties.

Tourism has become a significant factor in Liverpool's economy based on the popularity of the Beatles.

The people of Liverpool are referred to as "Scousers" a reference to "Scouse" which is a term for the distinctive local accent or dialect. Scouse is also derived from "Lobscouse", a traditional sailors'stew usually made with lamb and hard tack( very hard, baked bread/ cracker).
British comedians like to take the mickey out of Liverpudlians and stereotype the natives.

In the past, Liverpool was undoubtedly a major shipbuilding place which provided vessels for the local owners who were expanding their trading connections, especially those across the Atlantic and the city is still an important port ( it is the main port for trading with North America.)
In 2008 Liverpool was designated as the European capital of Culture.
From the 1980s it promoted tourism using its heritage as an attraction. Liverpool is also famous for its football club. Founded in 1892 the Liverpool football Club is a premier league Football club. It has won 5 European cups.

A day in Liverpool.
There are so many sights to visit that it was not easy for our friends to choose the most interesting places to visit in a day. They did very well.
We arrived on Black Friday and to avoid being held up in the traffic on the motorway on Saturday,  our friends decided to take the train from Chester to Liverpool.It takes about 40 minutes. We arrived at about 10.30am and went straight away to the museum. Entry to the museum and all of the events and exhibitions is free.

The museum of Liverpool reflects the city's history, people and culture. You can explore how the port, its people, their sporting history have shaped the city. The displays also show the life, work and leisure activities of Liverpool people from all walks of life over the last 200 years.
Some exhibitions are more orientated to children but it is worth visiting anyway.
We went to the Beatles show where the four of us sang a karaoke on Yellow submarine. We were cheered amicably by young girls who listened to our performance.
We continued our visit of Liverpool and went sightseeing on a double decker bus city tour. The weather was terrible, cold, rainy and windy. Some brave tourists who didn't feel the cold sat in the open deck. Liverpool has got many historic buildings.

These majestic buildings were conceived and constructed as visible symbols of Liverpool's international prestige, proud emblems of its commercial prowess.
On top of each tower of the Royal Liver Building stand the mythical Liver Birds. Popular legend has it that while one giant bird looks out over the city to protect its people, the other bird looks out to sea at the new sailors coming in to port. Alternatively, local legend states one liver Bird is male, looking inland to see if the pubs are open, whilst the other is female, looking out to sea to see if there are any handsome sailors coming up the river.

Sailor's Home
The sailor's Home provided a cheap place for seafarers to stay when they were in port, even providing facilities such as a savings bank and a post-office. It was paid for by merchants and shipowners. The Home, operated from 1850 to 1969.
When the census was taken in 1881 there were 118 sailors staying there. They came from all over the world including France, North America, Scandinavia, Malta and Barbados.

The sandstone Liver Bird was originally at the centre of the carved decoration above the door of the Sailor's Home. It was found by archaeologists before the Liverpool ONE shopping centre was built.

Liverpool is also characterized by its churches and cathedrals. The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is also called " Paddy's Wigwam" because of its modern architecture. and actually it  looks like an Indian tent!
Liverpool Cathedral ( Anglican) is magnificent and its architecture and  is more classical.

You cannot leave Liverpool without visiting the Beatles museum and the Cavern Club. The beatles museum opened in 1990.
The French audio guide is narrated by John Lennon's sister Julia. Her French is so elementary and boring  that you ended up losing interest in the narration. I recommend the English version for foreign visitors who understand English. The most interesting part is undoubtedly the replica of the Cavern Club where the Beatles used to play. There is an excellent collection of original documents, manuscripts, interviews, souvenirs, musical instruments, clothes, John Lennon's white piano and glasses.
The Beatles Story explains how they were formed, how they changed and finally split up. When we walked in Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane room, we found ourselves singing.....overwhelmed by the 60s atmosphere.
Although the museum entrance ticket is a bit expensive, it provides an unforgettable experience with the Beatles and  brings you back to the 60s and the story of the fabulous Four in a nostalgic way.
And for those who are interested in pop culture and British cultural history , it is a must-see.

The end of an era
On the 27th May, 1973, after numerous problems, the Cavern closed its doors forever despite vociferous protests from fans. A few years later, the warehouse above was demolished to make way for the Mersey Rail Line. This never happened however and in 1984 a new shopping centre called Cavern Walks was built on the site part of which includes a Cavern Club and a pub called "Abbey Road".

Queen played their first ever gig at the Cavern on Halloween 1970. Freddie Mercury had been in Penny Lane at the time...
The Cavern Club is an iconic place and the ultimate Liverpool destination. It brings you way back in the sixties. When we were in, the second venue was great. The band sang our favorite Beatles hits and although the place was hot, sweaty, crowded we could not stop singing and dancing with the others.The atmosphere is unique! I recommend it without any hesitation.
