Antony's odessey from Vietnam to France or the experience of a teenager who fled Vietnam with his family in 1979.
Antony was only fifteen when he and his family embarked on to a boat and left their native country
(Vietnam) after the fall of Sagon in April 1975. The fall of Sagon was the cause of a massive exodus and after the reunification of the north and the south, the city of Sagon was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.
The refugees were called "Boat people" because they escaped by sea.
North Vietnam ( communist) invaded South Vietnam that is why thousands of Vietnamese fled the radical government implemented in their country.
Leaving one's house, country and friends must have been a hardship for a fifteen-year-old teenager.
Back to history
Indochina founded in 1887 was part of the French colonial empire which included Vietnam,Cambodgia, Laos and a small part in China. Indochina was rich and heavily populated. Financially speaking, the French colonisation in the Far East was a success, in fact it was called " the pearl of the empire".
The French national health system was developed as well as the French curriculum in schools and high schools. A local bourgeoisie appeared ,therefore the Vietnamese monarchy gradually weakened.
But independency increasingly gained ground in favour of the local communists. During World War II , Indochina was occupied by Japan which supported the Vichy government.
However the French Indochina had to cope with regular riots especially in Vietnam, and the communists took advantage of the unsettled political situation.
Cambodgia proclaimed its independence in 1953 and the Geneva Accords acknowledged Vietnam , Laos and Cambodgia independence in 1954.
Although France had special relationship with Vietnam it became more and more difficult to keep the good relationship with the communist authorities who ran the whole country.
Marguerite Duras
Marguerite Donnadieu, known as Marguerite Duras was a French novelist, playright, scriptwriter, and experimental filmmaker.
She was born near Sagon and was awarded the Goncourt Prize for the autobiographical novel " The Lover" " l'Amant".
Marguerite Donnadieu attended the Chasseloup Laubat high school in Sagon and passed her baccalaurat
(A level) . Then she left Indochina just after graduating and returned to France in 1931.
When her father died in 1918, he left Marguerite, her mother and her two brothers practically destitute. But with her savings of twenty years, she purchased a piece of uncultivable terrain where she hoped to grow rice, but it was inundated by the sea during six months of the year. Ruined and enraged at this misfortune, she became an intermittent mother, periodically depressed. Then she returned to her former job.( teacher).
In the film " l'Amant" ( the Lover) this period of Marguerite's life was referred because Marguerite was affected by her mother's lack of success.
A perilous escape
As soon as the country was reunited, the Vietnamese were not allowed to leave the country. Soon in 1977/78 the active and repressive politics against the local capitalists forced thousands of Vietnamese to leave the country.
Some families boarded on rickety broken boats and were landed where the boats arrived. Lots of boats were overcrowded and the refugees perished on the seas.
In search of a better life
Most of the families living in South Vietnam have at least one of their members who was one of the boat people. They were all in search of freedom and a brighter future, freedom of speech and a better education for their children. Refugees diced with death sailing on overloaded and unsafe boats. Some Vietnamese refugees were massacred by Thai pirates, or died of drowning, cold, desease and starvation.
Antony settled in France while his brother settled in houston ( Texas) . Actually there is a huge vietnamese community in Houston. Canada also welcomed a lot of Vietnamese refugees.
Vietnam today.
Vietnam is still run by a communist government but there has been progress on economic growth and poverty reduction. However the communist governement is still controlling people's activities. Dissidents can be imprisoned and the government regulates and monitors the internet use.
From teenager to Adult
After working in the Paris region, Antony decided to move to Bordeaux and eventually moved to Royan.
He opened his restaurant called " Les Saveurs d'Asie" more than 20 years ago. His wife is the chef in the restaurant and she prepares homemade dishes far different from the food you can get in the increasing number of Chinese "buffet" in France.
We have been regular customers for years and we do like the Vietnamese delicious delicacies. ( Shumai, spring rolls, sweet and sour pork, dumplings....the restaurant is .nicely decorated with a huge painting of the Ha Long Bay.
Antony has been living in France for more than thirty years and speaks perfect French. He loves the French language.
His restaurant is open every day except on Mondays, you can also order takeaway.
