Motorbike rally October 2nd

A few weeks ago , we left home to join our regular group of bikers in Cozes. Phil and Graziela had organized a very nice ride in the departement of Charente maritime and les Deux S�vres.We left around 9.am after having a cup of coffee at Phil's our upholsterer in Cozes. There were 16 motorbikes and about 25 people.
So on that cool Sunday morning we took the direction of Saintes riding along secondary roads. Phil had chosen our route and we all enjoyed the peaceful narrow roads before reaching Chaniers where we waited for crossing the river Charente . There is a car barge that can fit a few cars and not more than 12 people for safety reasons.The boatman said that he only had 12 life jackets!!!
The Charente river is not wide. We all had fun watching the bikers get onto the barge and it took the whole group more than 30 minutes to reach the opposite bank.
When everyone had crossed we left for les Deux S�vres. We rode along forests , went past a herd of cows running all together. Perhaps they were scared by the motorbikes engines!!
After an hour-drive we reached a village called " St C�saire" and had a coffee in a multi-service shop. called " la vall�e du Coran" "Le Coran" is a small tributary of the Charente river. The word " Coran" is a Charentaise word to say " courant" ( stream). While the group was having coffee I visited the beautiful roman church of St C�saire and like most of the churches in villages it was worth visiting it.
Then back to the motorbikes we continued our route but had an unexpected event. Ian and Robina had to stop because their motorbike broke down. So they decided to stop and insisted that we should continue the route without them because they didn't want to delay the rest of the group They had the itinerary so they could join us for lunch. Then after a few kilometres away we reached our lunch destination : the chateau of Javarzay and while we were getting our picnic from the motorbike cases, we were surprised to hear a motorbike coming to us . They were Ian and Robina. After cooling their motorbike for a while it started again and they were able to have lunch with us. But even if their motorbike sounded OK they decided to leave the group and ride slowly home and have it checked by a garage.
We all enjoyed relaxing in the park near a lake. Some fishermen were fishing while we were having our picnic in the shade. Time went smoothly.
Then we had a guided tour of the chateau which was very interesting. We were taught a lot about local habits and customs , local costumes and women's hats called "coiffes" ( sort of head-dress)
There is a museum inside the chateau that displays more than 400 coiffes and bonnets. The guided tour is mainly about Jean Fran�ois Cail ( 1804-1871) who was a famous French industrialist and entrepreneur. He was born in Chef-Boutonne and had a brilliant career in French industrialization. He started as a factory worker making machinery for the sugar industry and then manufactured Crampton locomotives. He became a very wealthy man and lived in Paris where he had the Hotel Cail built which is today the " Mairie of 8�me arrondissement in Paris "
And when you visit the Eiffel Tower you'll see his name engraved because he also contributed to the project.
After an interesting guided tour , we left the chateau de Javarzay rode back to Cozes . On the way back we decided to stop and have a drink before saying goodbye. Most of the caf�s are closed on Sundays in the area. Luckily we found one open. The owners were a bit surprised and they had difficulties in waiting on all the bikers !!! They were too many people at the same time!

Il y a quelques semaines , nous sommes partis � Cozes pour rejoindre notre groupe de motards r�guliers Philippe et Grazi�la avaient organis� un circuit tr�s agr�able dans le d�partement de Charente Maritime et dans les Deux S�vres. Nous sommes partis vers 9 heures apr�s une tasse de caf� chez Philippe , notre tapissier � Cozes. Il y avait seize motos et environs vingt cinq personnes.
Ce dimanche matin un peu frais, nous avons pris la direction de Saintes , roulant sur des routes secondaires. Philippe avait choisi notre itin�raire et nous avons tous appr�ci� les petites routes paisibles avant d'arriver � Chaniers o� nous avons attendu pour traverser la Charente. Il y a un passeur qui peut mettre quelques voitures et pas plus de 12 personnes pour des raisons de s�curit�. L'employ� nous a dit qu'il n'avait que 12 gilets de sauvetage!
La Charente n'est pas large . et nous nous sommes tous amus�s � regarder les motards monter sur l'embarcation et il a fallu plus de trente minutes � tout le groupe pour atteindre la rive oppos�e. Quand tout le monde a travers� nous sommes partis pour Les Deux S�vres. Nous avons long� des forets, sommes pass�s devant un troupeau de vaches qui couraient toutes ensemble. Peut-�tre qu'elles ont eu peur du bruit des moteurs !
Apr�s une heure de route, nous sommes arriv�s dans un village qui s'appelait St C�saire et nous avons pris un caf� dans un magasin muli-service qui s'appelait "la vall�e du Coran". Le Coran est un petit affluent de la Charente . Le mot "coran" est le mot charentais qui veut dire "courant"
Pendant que le groupe prenait un caf� j''ai visit� la belle �glise romane de St C�saire et comme dans la plupart des �glises dans les villages , elle �tait digne d'int�r�t.
Ensuite , on a repris les motos et nous avons continu� notre circuit mais nous avons eu un �v�nement tout � fait impr�vu. Ian et Robina ont d� s'arr�ter parce que leur moto est tomb�e en panne. Aussi il ont d�cid� de s'arr�ter et ils ont insist� pour que nous continuions notre itin�raire sans eux parce qu'ils ne voulaient pas retarder le reste du groupe. ils avaient l'itin�raire aussi ils pouvaient nous rejoindre pour d�jeuner. Ensuite apr�s quelques kilom�tres nous sommes arriv�s � notre destination pour d�jeuner: le ch�teau de Javerzay et pendant que nous sortions nos pique-niques des sacoches, nous avons eu la surprise d'entendre une moto qui arrivait vers nous. C'�tait Ian et Robina. Apr�s avoir fait refroidir leur moto pendant un petit moment, elle a red�marr� et ils ont pu d�jeuner avec nous. Mais m�me si leur moto avait l'air de marcher ils ont d�cid� de quitter le groupe et de rouler tranquillement jusqu'� chez eux et la faire v�rifier dans un garage.
Nous avons tous savour� une bonne d�tente pr�s d'un lac. Quelques p�cheurs �taient en train de p�cher pendant que nous faisions notre pique-nique. Le temps s'�coulait tranquillement.
Ensuite nous avons fait une visite guid�e du ch�teau qui �tait tr�s int�ressante. Nous avons appris beaucoup de choses sur les habitudes et les coutumes des habitants de la r�gion, sur leur costumes, les coiffes des femmes. il y a un mus�e � l'int�rieur du ch�teau qui expose plus de 400 coiffes et bonnets. La visite guid�e est principalement sur Jean-Fran�ois Cail ( 1804-1871 ) qui �tait un industriel et un entrepreneur fran�ais tr�s c�l�bre. Il est n� � chef-Boutonne il a fait une brillante carri�re dans l'industrialisation fran�aise.
il a commenc� comme ouvrier dans une usine fabriquant des machines pour l'industrie sucri�re et ensuite il a fabriqu� les locomotives "Crampton". il est devenu un homme tr�s riche a v�cu � Paris o� il s'est fait construire l'h�tel Cail qui est aujourd'hui la Mairie du 8�me arrondissement. et quand vous visitez la Tour Eiffel vous verrez aussi son nom grav� car il a aussi contribu� au projet.
Apr�s une visite guid�e tr�s int�ressante, nous avons quitt� le ch�teau de Javerzay pour repartir sur Cozes. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons d�cid� de nous arr�ter pour boire un verre avant de nous dire au revoir.
La plupart des caf�s sont ferm�s le dimanche dans la r�gion . Heureusement nous en avons trouv� un d'ouvert.
Les patrons �taient un peu surpris et ils ont eu du mal � servir tous les motards. Il y avait trop de monde en m�me temps!!!
