Last year we rented the keep of the chteau de Crazannes and its three double rooms and two other rooms in the chteau.

Built in 11th century, the keep was a defensive tower. It has been splendidly restored to sleep up to 6 people.

"castle of Puss in Boots". It goes back to the 17th century, when the castle was the property of the real Marquis de Carabas who inspired Charles Perrault to write his famous tale.
In the 16th century the Acarie family bought the chteau and lived here for 300 years until 1760. Jules Gouffier also known as Count of Caravase married Louis Acarie's sister.Charles Perrault changed the name into Marquis de Carabas rich and famous thanks to his cunning cat known as Puss in Boots. The legend of Crazannes castle was born. Charles Perrault met Jules Gouffier at the court and was impressed by the unconventional man who made a quick fortune.
Originally owned by the lords of Tonnay Charente, the chteau changed proprietors many times during its history. In the 16th it belonged to the Acarie family. At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle and its outbuildings had been abandonned and were almost in ruins. Roger Chaudruc decided to buy the castle in 1903 and dedicated his life and his fortune to restoring the chteau.
Today the Chteau de Crazannes is the property of the Gambiasi family (who also owned the famous French shops called "la foire-fouille" and Monsieur Meuble).
In late afternoon we also took part in a guided tour. Marylne was our guide and we all enjoyed travelling back in time. We discovered an authentic interior, the kitchen with its large fireplace, the guard's room at the top of the round
tower, a sitting room with its carved wooden fireplace, a library and a banquet room with its original carved wooden ceiling.
The chteau is set at the heart of a 8 hectares park and has lovely gardens You will also discover a medieval chapel opposite the keep and the moat filled in with water. And next to the castle, a dovecot that included more than 1900 pigeon-holes
The possession of a dovecot was a symbol of status and power and a priviledge of the seigneurial lord in the Middle Ages. The wealthier the lord was the bigger the dovecot was.

Without doubt this was one of the most memorable places we have ever stayed in. I recommend it without any hesitation. It is fabulous.
